Mike Matheny is Head Athletic Trainer and Clinical Associate Professor at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York.  He is lead author on a pair of articles in the current International Journal of Athletic Therapy and Training related to Vocal Cord Dysfunction - Exercise-Induced Laryngeal Obstruction.  His collaboration with a Speech Language Pathologist in the recognition and management of VCD-EILO has been chronicled recently in the NATA news and in the upcoming Training & Conditioning magazine.

Mike and I had a great chat about a number of things about his experiences and career in athletic training.  I think you'll enjoy this episode!

Sue Falsone spoke with a group of Tusculum College students for this episode of ATPodcast.  Sue currently serves as Head of Athletic Training and Sports Performance for the US Men’s National Soccer Team.  She is the owner of Structure & Function, an educational and consulting business for healthcare providers and athletes.  For several years, she served as Head Athletic Trainer for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

This is very open and honest discussion of her career and she gives great professional advice to these soon-to-be athletic trainers and it serves as a good model for other student-led interviews.  If you have interest in your student group doing some thing similar, let me know!

Erik Nason serves as president of Athletic Trainers' Association of Florida.  He worked for 17 years at NASA's Kennedy Space Center providing care to employees and contractors.  He currently works as a physician extender and Manager of Athletic Training Services for an orthopaedic group in Titusville, Florida and he also owns his own company providing athletic training services to action sports.

We talk on this episode about his almost 20 year career working primarily in 'non-traditional' or 'emerging' settings and about his experiences in the ATAF and his contract services company.

Randy Cohen serves as Associate Athletic Director for University of Arizona's C.A.T.S. Medical Services.  He is currently chair of NATA's College and University Athletic Trainers' Committee and has worked with a number of organizations on behalf of Certified Athletic Trainers.  He is currently chair of a taskforce developing a liability and risk assessment toolkit for athletic trainers.  We talk about a huge number of items and this is one of my favorite episodes.  Heck, we even kept talking after the interview was over.  Keep listening after the outro for another great story!

Alyssa McPherson is a Certified Athletic Trainer at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.  There, she serves as a visiting lecturer and works with IU's Army ROTC program as well as with the ballet and contemporary dance departments and IU's 'Marching Hundred' band.  We talk about the need for athletic trainers among competitive drum corps and marching bands.

Alyssa also completed the certified athletic trainer residency at Emory Sports Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia and she describes that experience in detail.  A very good episode.  Enjoy!

Certified Athletic Trainer couple Lee and Alicia Lysiuk talk about their careers and life as married AT's.  They both work for St. Vincent Sports Performance in the Indianapolish area.  Alicia covers Heritage Christian School and works with USA Gymnastics, while Lee covers Pike High School and works with USA Diving.

Denise Yoder has been at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois since 1997--serving as Head Athletic Trainer since 2012.  She talks in this episode about her career and experiences at the NCAA DIII school.  We also talk a lot about work/life balance, which she accomplishes through involvement with community theater.  Very good chat!

Stephanie Guzzo just finished her first tour with the Orginal Harlem Globetrotters after serving four years as an athletic trainer at St. Mary's College of Maryland.  She talks about her experiences in these settings.  She is active in the District 3 and Maryland Young Professionals Committees and talks about her volunteer service.

The findings from her master's thesis was published in the November issue of International Journal of Athletic Therapy & Training, titled "The Effects of Walking on Gastrocnemius Cooling During an Ice Bag Treatment".  She discusses this in this episode as well as her experiences utilizing the XLNTbrain concussion management system.  Good stuff.

Ronnie Barnes serves as Senior Vice President of Medical Services and Head Athletic Trainer of the New York Giants.  He has been with the Giants since 1980 making him the longest tenured of any current NFL athletic trainer.  During that span, the Giants have won 4 Super Bowl titles.  He was the first ever Certified Athletic Trainer to come out of the East Carolina University Sports Medicine Program!

On numerous occasions Ronnie has been voted Professional and NFL athletic trainer of the year.  He has served as a past PFATS President and is currently on the NFL's Head, Neck, and Spine Committee. 

In 1999, Ronnie was inducted into the NATA Hall of Fame.

Hannah Gaveske is a Certified Athletic Trainer in her third year at the United States Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California.  She talks about her experiences there as well as about working BMX Supercross events and on several Dew Extreme Sports Tour stops.  We also talk about the USOC's Sports Medicine Volunteer Program as well.

Hannah was previously employed at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa where she worked with Chris Norton, a Luther College athlete who had sustained a spinal cord injury.  She was instrumental in helping Chris form SCI CAN--a non-profit organization whose mission is to support those with spinal cord injury and neurological disorders. Russ Fiore is in his 35th year at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island where he currently serves as Head Athletic Trainer.  He has an article entitled, "Plantar-Plate Disruptions: 'The Severe Turf-Toe Injury.' Three Cases in Contact Athletes" pending publication in the JAT.  It's available online now!

Russ also holds several patents for technology used widely in athletic training--namely bracing and rehab equipment.  He talks extensively about his experiences in bringing his ideas from concept to marketplace and the patent process.  Fascinating stuff!

Dr. Jeff Driban is a researcher at Tufts Medical Center in the Greater Boston area with a research focus on osteoarthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions.  His background as a clinical athletic trainer led him to cofound sportsmedres.org, a website dedicated to bridging the gap between sports medicine research and clinical practice.  An amazing resource for athletic trainers!  Dr. Driban discusses his career and involvement with Eastern Athletic Trainers' Association and the Athetic Trainers' Osteoarthritis Consortium as well.

Jim Bazluki is a Certified Athletic Trainer for Carolinas Medical Center and currently serves as Head Athletic Trainer at Northwest Cabarrus High School in Concord, North Carolina.  Additionally, Jim is Vice President of the North Carolina Athletic Trainers' Association and chair of their Strategic Planning committee.  In March, he was the 21st person inducted into the North Carolina Athletic Trainers Hall of Fame.  Most notably, Jim was the first ever guest on ATPodcast!

Several Certified Athletic Trainers joined ATPodcast for a roundtable discussion of the NATA's Executive Committee on Education white paper report and recommendations of the entry-level master's degree as the most appropriate degree for professional preparation of AT's.  Sara Brown, former chair of the ECE was able to join us and was helpful in providing insight into the process and decisions behind the recommendation.  Also, Dr. Michael McGee of Lenoir Rhyne University talked about the transition his program made to ELM a couple years ago.  A very informative episode.  Thanks also to Dr. Pradeep Vanguri, Todd Hirsch, Brad Morgan, Kristi Messina, and Ryan Wantz for their participation!

I asked selected speakers at the Tennessee Athletic Trainers' Society Symptosium in Nashville, Tennessee this weekend to summarize their presentations.  Dr. David Liddle of Vanderbilt University Medical Center summarizes his presentation on running injuries.  Dr. Gary Solomon, clinical neuropsychologist for the Nashville Predators and Tennessee Titan and co-director of the Vanderbilt Sport Concussion Center discusses current research in Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. Emergency physician Dr. Warne Fitch describes some take-home points from his presentation, "Little Known Signs of Well Known Problems". In April 2013, Tennessee became the 45th state to pass a youth concussion law.  Working in conjunction with state legislators and various medical and allied health groups for several years, Johnnie Anderson and Tim Hoskins were instrumental in getting the law passed, particularly in a format which recognizes Certified Athletic Trainers as experts in concussion management.  Tim and Johnnie join me to discuss their careers and the process by which Tennessee's concussion law came to pass.
